FABIO BRUNAZZI – LIVING ON A SMALL SAILBOAT

living on a small sailboat

I am a Psychologist turned professional sailor, with a life long passion for writing, living on a small sailboat named Tranquility.

I grew up in Italy, in the suburbs of Milan. The uneasiness of my surrounding forced me to look beyond, to find solace in wild places. The Alps were an easy background to discover, and I enjoyed traveling by foot and bicycle.

After graduating in Psychology I landed the job I wanted, human resources consultant for private and public companies, and even if it was a struggle to make ends meet I had just started to have more customers and build my portfolio. I could not complain.

Until my life suddenly changed.

Nothing in my past seemed to point in the direction of sailing, it all happened by chance that I started floating aboard many different boats for 9 years and counting.

It was as easy as saying yes to a friend’s call for help. He needed a person who could manage a sailing business in Venezuela. A psychologist who had never been on a boat before was apparently the best candidate for the job!

I left in a heartbeat.

Since the first amateurish steps, I pursued a professional title and obtained a Yachtmaster Offshore with commercial endorsement that opened the doors to the yachting industry.

Buying, fixing and living on a small sailboat complicated exponentially the equation that tries to predict my turbulent behavior.

Writing this blog is how I try good keep track of my ever changing life.

THE PHILOSOPHY

“It is a noble thing to give an old boat a new life and the environment can do without another new boat squashed into a marina” Roger Taylor, MingMing

“Small is not only cute. Small is attainable, small is tough!” Me

Restoring an old sailboat was a way to give a worthy vessel a second life.

What’s the sense of buying a new boat when so many good ones are in need of love and care?

Tranquility is the right boat as it’s paid for and she has been carefully refitted.

It is small and simple forcing me to be more exposed to the environment, yet it is a cozy shell capable to keep me safe and in relative comfort.

Despite the limited comforts, living on a small sailboat has its appeal. I learned through the years that there is a composite audience out there that follows this journey both for educational and entertainment purpose.

My mission is to serve this audience and collect, edit and report what I find along the way.

Welcome aboard!
